Surfboard Volume
Calculator

A surfboard volume calculator estimates the ideal volume — in litres — for your board based on your weight, surfing ability, and the waves you ride. As a guide, beginners need roughly 100% of their body weight in kg as litres, intermediates around 50–70%, and advanced surfers about 35–40%. Enter your details below for a precise recommendation, plus the exact length, width and thickness Rebel would shape for you.

How surfboard volume is calculated

Volume is a measure of the foam in a board, in litres. It is the single best predictor of how easily a board floats, paddles and catches waves. You calculate it from the board's three dimensions and a shape factor that accounts for how full or foiled the outline is:

The formula
Volume (L) = (Lengthcm × Widthcm × Thicknesscm × ShapeFactor) ÷ 1000

ShapeFactor by board type

Board typeShapeFactor
Shortboard0.54
Easy Rider / Fish0.56
Hybrid / Funboard0.58
Longboard0.60

Worked example

A 6'0" × 20" × 2½" shortboard. Convert to centimetres (182.9 × 50.8 × 6.35), multiply by the shortboard ShapeFactor of 0.54, divide by 1000:

(182.9 × 50.8 × 6.35 × 0.54) ÷ 1000
≈ 31.8 litres

The Rebel difference

Most calculators give a number.
Ours gives a board.

A volume figure on its own is only half the answer. Rebel's calculator reverse-solves the exact length, width and thickness that produce your ideal volume in the shape that suits how you surf — the same starting point Thys Strydom uses at the planer.

Then a human takes over. With more than 20 years and close to 22,000 boards shaped by hand in Jeffreys Bay — a stone's throw from Supertubes — Thys hand-refines every brief into a board built for one surfer. That's the difference between a number and a board you'll ride for years.

Volume FAQs

How much volume do I need on my surfboard?

As a guide, beginners need roughly 100% of their body weight in kilograms expressed as litres, intermediate surfers around 50–70%, and advanced surfers about 35–40%. So an 80 kg beginner wants about 80 L, while an 80 kg advanced surfer might ride 28–32 L. Use Rebel's surfboard volume calculator to get a precise figure plus the exact dimensions for your custom board.

How do I calculate surfboard volume?

Surfboard volume is calculated as Volume (litres) = (Length × Width × Thickness in centimetres × a ShapeFactor) ÷ 1000. The ShapeFactor reflects the board's foil — roughly 0.54 for a shortboard, 0.56 for a fish or easy rider, 0.58 for a hybrid and 0.60 for a longboard. Rebel's calculator does this for you and reverse-solves the dimensions from your ideal volume.

What size surfboard should I ride for my weight and height?

Your weight is the main driver of volume and your height helps set length and width. A heavier or taller surfer needs a longer, wider, higher-volume board for stability and paddle power; a lighter surfer can ride something shorter and thinner. Enter your details in the calculator and Rebel returns a recommended length, width and thickness.

Do you make surfboards for beginners?

Absolutely. Beginners are best suited to higher-volume boards like a longboard or easy rider that paddle easily and catch waves with stability. Rebel's calculator recommends a beginner-friendly volume and shape, and Thys refines it for your size and home break.

Who shapes Rebel surfboards?

Every Rebel surfboard is hand-shaped by Thys Strydom, a master shaper with more than 20 years' experience who has shaped close to 22,000 boards by hand in Jeffreys Bay.
